Don't let Kevin fool you with his talk of reading and educating himself. Along with the stacks of books and magazines I have bought for myself, I bought him one book entitled "She's Having a Baby and I'm Having a Breakdown." He promptly lost it. I have searched and searched and that book is no where to be found. He does listen to me as I read aloud to him about the growth and progress that that baby has made each week. He is especially interested to know what fruit or vegetable the baby is resembling (size-wise, I hope!) each week. First it was a pinto bean, then a medium green olive. We progressed from a small plum to a large lime to a peach. I guess they ran our of food products for awhile because soon it was the size of a softball. I am happy to report that this week, Week 21, the baby is now the size of a large banana. And I am about the size of a medium watermelon.

People who know me and are familiar with my love for shopping, would be surprised to know that I have not bought anything for this baby. Not one thing. I don't know why I hesitate. Every indication is that this pregnancy is low-risk and the baby is healthy but despite this, I am in no hurry to start purchasing all the stuff we're going to need. I haven't even picked a nursery theme yet. Maybe once we find out the sex of the baby (hopefully on December 13) I will have more motivation to get shopping. Unfortunately I am worried that there is another reason that I don't want to go buy the mounds of stuff that this newborn is going to need. The truth is that I don't like buying things for other people. That does mean that I am not generous, I just hate to buy things for the sake of buying them...Christmas for instance. I hate going to a store and having to find that "perfect something". Now if I am somewhere, and I see that perfect something, I will buy it and give it just because. Even as a child, when we would go to the local ShopKo to buy a gift for a friends' birthday party, I was much more interested in finding something for myself instead. Supposedly I inherited this trait from my father. I have never outgrown this character flaw. So, in all honesty, I am afraid that I will head out to the stores, with good intentions to buy blankents, diapers, onesies, and little socks, and instead I will make it home with a new bottle of perfume and a thick book from Barnes and Noble.

A web designer I am not, but it's getting there. Be sure to check out our pictures on the left, especially the ultrasound pics. In the second one (at 18 weeks), I think Baby is waving his (or her) hand greeting us all. Let me know if you need help figuring out what is what. I know we did.

Woohoo! Today I am twenty weeks pregnant. That means we are exactly halfway there. Well, if all goes well and I carry to term and as long as the baby comes on time, and if it doesn't come two weeks late or something ridiculous like that, then we are halfway there...

For our Saturday night viewing pleasure, Kevin and I rented Nova's documentary "A Miracle of Life". While certainly fascinating, it did cause flashbacks of seventh grade biology class. I think we acutally had to have permission slips from home to watch this movie. I remember that a few kids had to leave class as their parents wouldn't sign the slip. My parents were more than happy that I got the birds and bees lecture at school. Overall, the movie was interesting and the photography is amazing. And as I really wasn't paying too much attention back in junior high, I am glad to find out how I got in this mess to start with!!

Reading through this, it seems that we have skipped right over the beginning. That may be fitting as I am currently 19 weeks and 6 days pregnant (but who's counting?) But I think a little background infomation might be helpful. Kevin and I are expecting our first child, due April 14, 2003. Kevin and I will be older, or as I prefer, "more mature" parents. Each day has been filled with new experiences and I am sure that the upcoming months hold even more surprises for us.

After over twenty-four hours of searching, I found the blasted binky. It was on the far side of the bathroom, between the toilet and the wall. Who woulda thunk to look there??

Okay, I have to confess that I am a little worried. I have been babysitting my great-neice for the past three hours and I am about wiped out. It certainly didn't help that I had to wake up at the crack of dawn to begin this little adventure. My conquering of morning sickness is to miss the morning time all together. The next problem is that my home is far from being baby-proofed. I have to watch her like a hawk. Not that she's not good, on the contrary, she is very good...she's just everywhere!

Her mom said that she would just sit down and watch cartoons. That lasted for about thirty seconds, long enough for her mom to walk out the door. Of course, the TV has to stay on the Cartoon Network channel even though she's not watching it. So far this morning, we have cooked breakfast (and not eaten it), asked for candy, teased the dog, drawn pictures, looked at photo albums, eaten an apple, lost her binky, and tried to use the big people's toilet. I am ready for a nap!

I almost forgot to mention that we got in an argument over the color of Big Bird. She was very determined and tried hard to convince me that he is "geen" but I stuck to my guns on this one.

Kevin and I are starting this online journal to help preserve some of our thoughts, feelings and emotions as we prepare for parenthood.
