Earlier tonight I informed Kevin that we are going to start on the nursery this weekend. I want to paint the walls a pale yellow. I asked Kevin whether he thought we should ask the landlord for permission before we paint. He thought we probably should as they "are his walls".
"But what if he says no?" I inquired.
"They are his walls," Kevin reiterated. Sometimes my husband is too logical.
"But then we wouldn't be able to paint them," I told him. Kevin refused to answer. I tried offering him some Heather logic..."It is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission."
"Well, yes," Kevin agreed. "but you don't always get forgiveness."

Once again, he's right and I am wrong. But I still don't think that I am going to call the landlord. Shoot, I haven't even told him that we have a dog here yet.

Mom and I were talking about my shopping trip to Kansas City. I told her that we had looked at some rocker/gliders and that Babies R Us had some really nice ones. I went on and on about how comfortable they were. Finally, Mom interrupted and in a puzzled voice, asked, "How do you know that?"
Confused, I answered, "Because I sat in them." Complete silence from her end. And then it dawned on me. She thought we were talking about baby swings or something equally unfathomable that I would or could sit in. I laughed so hard imagining my pregnant self taking a seat in a baby swing. As if that would even be possible!

Waiting until the third trimester to do all of the shopping one needs to do for a baby is not the greatest idea. I left the house early this morning and headed to Kansas City. On the way, I met my friend Melissa and together we went to Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Baby Depot, Costco, and lunch at the Olive Garden. It was a great day but I think it wore both of us out. I did get some good deals including some bulk boxes of diapers and wipes. There are 228 diapers in the box, kind of depressing to think that will last us less than a month! Kevin is sad that he had to miss the fun to stay home and study...that's what he tells me anyway.

Is this about us??

A couple just started their Lamaze class, and they were
given an activity requiring the husband to wear a bag of
sand - to give him an idea of what it feels like to be
pregnant. The husband stood up and shrugged saying, "This
doesn't feel so bad."

The instructor then dropped a pen and asked the husband to
pick it up.

"You want me to pick up the pen as if I were pregnant, the
way my wife would do it?" the husband asked.

"Exactly," replied the instructor.

To the delight of the other husbands, he turned to his
wife and said, "Honey, pick up that pen for me."

I called the hospital today and signed Kevin and I up for our Prepared Childbirth class. My friend Sheila, who happens to be the mother of five children, asked me why I was taking the class. I told her that I wanted to be prepared. She said that it didn't matter it I was prepared, the baby would come either way. I then told her that I wanted to be informed, and she told me that she could tell me anything that I needed to know!

I also signed up for the Beginning with Breastfeeding class. The lady took down my information and then told me that they like the husbands to come to the breastfeeding class as well. She then asked, "Will this be a problem?" I assurred her that no, it would not be a problem. However, I can already see it now...I browbeat Kevin into going with me and then he is the only man there. I think I will leave him at home and just give him the basics when I get done.

Conversation with a two-year-old

I stopped by my nephew Jason's house last night to visit with the family. His two-year-old (yes, I am a great-aunt, I always thought I was pretty good but...) was going strong, happy to have some company, I think. She is very observant and noticed that I was chewing something. The conversation played out like this:

Devan: You got gum?
Me: Yes.
Devan: Me see.

So I opened up and showed her my chewed piece of Juicy Fruit.

Devan: Oh cool.

That is her new phrase...oh cool...everything was cool. I think she used the phrase ten times while I was there. My gum was cool, her Grandma's laptop was cool, Sponge Bob Square Pants was cool. Well, she's right there, Sponge Bob is pretty cool.

So, I went to Barnes and Noble yesterday with the sole intention of buying a book of breastfeeding. Of course, this took me a good forty-five minutes to choose. Who would have thought that there would be so many different titles all covering what women have been doing instinctually since the beginning of time. Anyway...I could have bought the The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding from those breastfeeding gurus at La Leche League or The Nursing Woman's Companion. But on, no. I walk out of the store proudly carrying a copy of

The Idiot's Guide to Breastfeeding.

God help this baby.

Seriously, I was a little scared by the pictures in most of the books. The mother was shown with newborn happily feeding and standing over this idyllic scene was the DAD. In each book, Dad had longish, curly black hair with a mustache and looked as if he had came straight to the hospital from Woodstock. I am not kidding. At least the Idiot's Guide only had drawings for illustrations.

Week 28 starts today!!

Another week gone...time is flying. I had to go to the lab this week and take a test for Gestational Diabetes. This consisted of going to the lab, drinking a glass of a high glucose beverage (called Glucola), and then waiting an hour before having my blood drawn. I had heard terrible stories about the taste of the drink but it tasted just like Sprite to me. I haven't gotten the results yet but suppose I will when I go back to the doctor this next Wednesday.

I have been dragging Kevin to all the stores around town that carry baby stuff. He is remarkably patient with me considering I can spend ten minutes trying to decide between two different types of baby wipes and then leave without purchasing any. I told him that we needed to start getting diapers and he replied that we didn't need any of those yet. I asked him if he thought we should wait until we were on our way home from the hospital to stop and pick some up! He didn't answer me.

At twenty-seven weeks, today I officially enter the Third Trimester! What does this mean? It means, that we are two-thirds of the way done, one-third left to go. We are down to the last 13 weeks or 91 days if you would rather.

In pregnancy, they say that the first trimester is rough with morning sickness, fatigue, and hormone flucuations. I would have to agree. Then the second trimester is smooth sailing. You feel rested, even energetic and you start to show but aren't enormous yet. I would agree with most of that as well. Then comes the third trimester. Your abdomen stretches beyond all imagination, you can't get comfortable, you can't sleep, your ankles and legs swell. All kinds of good stuff to look forward to. At least the light at the end of the tunnel will be shining bright.

Reason number 153 that I am glad to be married. Kevin is an extremely helpful and thoughtful person. He has always gone out of his way to do extra things for me. I admit that I have been milking this character trait of his a little bit during this pregnancy. I can't help it! It's just easier to send him to the fridge then to get up off the couch myself. But I digress. It has become extremely difficult for me to keep up with my pedicures. Anyone who knows me knows that I detest my toes without bright red polish on them. Last night, Ied attempted to apply polish to my toes. Kevin watched me struggle a minute, before gently taking the polish out of my hand and taking over the job himself. He took his time and did an excellent job! Van Gogh couldn't have done it better himself.

After putting off buying any baby necessities until after the first of the new year. I wasn't realizing just how much stuff we need. I knew we needed some big items. I had a crib, changing table, stroller, and car seat all on my mental list. It's the small stuff that I had forgotten to think about...crib sheets, little socks, nail clippers, that bulb thing that you stick up baby's nose. Kevin and I were both amazed to read that baby can have ten to twelve diaper changes a DAY! That's a lot of diapers. I have been frequenting the baby sections of all the stores in town. It is very overwhelming. Most of my friends have already been there, done that with the baby thing so at least I have a place to turn for advice.

Yesterday, we bought a Prenatal Sound System. This handy device allows us to have two-way communication with baby in the womb. What can I say? I am a sucker for anything that promises to nourish baby's mind. We did have fun playing her some Mozart before bed last night and Kevin plugged in the microphone and sang some Air Supply to her. I can only imagine what she was thinking.

I had my monthly appointment with the OB/GYN today. It's starting to get routine...go in, pee in a cup, get weighed, listen to the heartbeat, get measured and go on about your business. Now they inform me that I have to start coming in every two weeks to pee in the cup, get weighed...well, you get the picture. I started to complain about having to go in every two weeks, and then I started thinking how fortunate I am that this pregnancy has been "routine". I haven't had one problem and for that I am very thankful.

I think, maybe, just maybe, Kevin and I have agreed on a first name for this baby. I won't annouce anything official just yet because April is still a ways off. It wouldn't be totally out of character for me to change my mind, you know.

The "bargain" changing table that we found yesterday has now doubled in price as I went to Michael's today and purchased these cute lined baskets to provide extra storage on the shelves beneath the table. Oh well. I knew once I got on the spending spree there would be no stopping me. Just kidding Mom!

I spent hours online today trying to find the perfect crib set for the nursery. We have decided to go with a Cow Jumped Over the Moon theme. I really wanted to go with a princess theme...everything pink and flowery...but Kevin wasn't having it. I never did find exactly what I was looking for. Not that there aren't a million to choose from. Are there really people that will shell out $300 for an infant sized bed-in-the-bag? I'm in the wrong business. If only I had paid more attention in junior high Home Ec. class.

100 Days!!

We are down to the last 100 days of this pregnancy! Not that I am counting or anything. It still seems like a really long time.

Now that it is officially after the holidays, I can start doing some shopping. Kevin and I planned an excursion to the mall to do just that. A phone call from Mom before we left quickly dampened my spirits. "Don't go buy anything big," she warned, "you'll get stuff at your shower and garage sale season is coming!" I knew she was right so we just went to look. We went to a a second-hand shop that carried baby furniture and they had a nice changing table. We left without buying but quickly decided that we needed it.

Kevin didn't think it would fit in my car so thought we should tie it on the luggage rack of his car. I firmly believed that it would fit in my car and convinced him of it as well. He took me home and proceeded back to the store in my car to buy the table. Here he came a short while later. It didn't fit! He was less than thrilled with me and told me that I needed to start trusting him on these matters. I pacified him with an apology and he left in his car to return to the store for the third time for the table. It fit in his car and is now sitting in the middle of our living room. It really is a nice table although it is dark brown wood and I want the room to be done in white furniture. I now have three pieces of furniture to refinish before April.

Happy New Year! We spent the evening at the Riverboat Casino in a nearby town. We ate dinner at the buffet where I got my fill of all-you-can-eat crablegs. Let me tell you that I can put away some crablegs. They were delicious! Then we tried our luck on the slot machines. I lost my money on the quarter slots while Kevin tried out the nickels. Alas we came home empty handed (or pocketed!) It was a nice evening regardless.

Between eloping, having a wedding and the pregnancy, 2002 was a humdinger of a year. Here's hoping that 2003 will be much calmer! I have a feeling that it will be until April when the little one comes along and turns our world upside down.
